What makes this AEC course important?
As someone who is looking to get started working on board super yachts or cruise ships, this training is designed and delivered as an entry level training sessions – basically this is the first rung in your career ladder and gives you much better employment prospects as you develop and grow.
How long does the training run for?
You’ll need to allow 4 days to complete the all of the training sessions and gain your AEC certificate. The entire course runs for approximately 30 hours.
What will I learn in the Approved Engine Course?
After successfully completion of the MCA AEC course you will be on your way to be a fully qualified boat engineer who understands the inner workings of yacht engine mechanics, such as their fuel system designs, how the power transmission functions and all of the safe working practices while maintenance is carried out.
During the training you will gain hands-on experience with all of the mechanics and computer systems that are in place to keep your yacht running efficiently.
Will there be a test?
Yes, you will need to complete a MCA exam in order to get the AEC Certification. There are a number of brief examinations that occur throughout the four days of the course.
Are there any prerequisites?
There are only a 2 main requirements to enrol in the AEC course.
- You’ll need to be at least 18 years of age.
- You’ll need to provide a current medical fitness certificate.
If you don’t have any formal experience working on board super yachts or cruise ships, you should be able to demonstrate at least 1 month of hands on practice.
What are some key things to keep in mind?
Becoming a yacht engineer isn’t just about learning the theory and basic’s in hands-on training as described above. When you’re working on board a ship at sea there will be a great deal of time management, inventory management, leadership and technical skills needed to ensure everything goes to plan. It can be a demanding position at times, but the rewards for a job well done more than make up for it.
Finishing the Approved Engine Course is the first step in your maritime career. You will want to consider which direction you’re going to take after the exam. For example, you could become a qualified assistant engineer, 2nd, 3rd or chief engineer. Having an end goal in mind will help keep you focused on doing the best you can in each course you undertake.
