Ship Security Officer CSO Course

Being a company security officer on a ship is a job that comes with many responsibilities. After you have completed the CSO program at Maritime Education Services you will have all of the skills needed to take care of every person on board your vessel while being able to manage urgent tasks as they happen. Maintaining the safety and security of the ship is the main role of a CSO officer.

In order to gain your CSO certification you will need to meet all of the qualifications set forth by the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency who is responsible for the UK’s maritime safety and implementing the ISPS code.

What Is CSO?

CRO stands for Company Security Officer which is a position of someone who watches of the safety and security of the entire vessel at all times. As an office you will need to be properly trained and ready to handle any situation related to both crew members and passengers on board.

Are there any prerequisites for the program?

Yes, you will need to have at least 12 months experience of on-going service at sea, or an adequate amount of time spent working on sea going vessels with competent knowledge of a ships standard operating procedures.

What do I need to do to get the certification?

The largest component of keeping a ship safe and secure is compliance. In order to obtain your CSO certification you will need to be able to confirm every aspect of a vessel is up to code and all regulations are being followed.

This includes having a knowledge of how to:

  • Systematically supervise ship security and plan in advance
  • Identify dangers and threats to minimize risks to crew and passengers
  • Inspect and monitor emergency response techniques
  • Maintain and operate security equipment as needed
  • Keep a watchful eye on crew, staff and passengers at all times

How long is the training?

The CSO program runs over 4 full days. During the training your instructors will cover all of the various exercises you need to pass the examinations and obtain the MCA certification.

Will I need to bring anything with me?

All of the training materials will be provided to you during the course. We also include meals and accommodation for all of our students. Our admission staff will provide a list of basic things such as clothes and your identification documents that will be needed.

Will I be in any danger while doing this course?

The CSO course is a class environment that focuses on teaching you about the dangers that may arise when you are working at sea, or are on board a vessel docked in a port. You will learn about the ship security officer’s responsibilities and how to best safe guard you self and those around you, but at no time will our instructors put you or your class mates in any immediate danger.
