This training adheres to all of the required guidelines and standards imposed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to provide certification.The deck hand course will provide you with everything you need in order to become proficient in all of the tasks necessary in being a deckhand, steward or stewardess, including important information regarding security awareness. Afterwards, students who will be graduating from the course will be competent in all of the tasks that will be required of them while working as a deckhand or steward/stewardess.The training package is offered in two parts.
  • DECK HAND – STEWARD / STEWARDESS ONBOARD SKILLS AND SEAMANSHIP SKILLS, FOR 9½ DAYS
  • STCW 2010 BASIC SAFETY TRAINING, FOR 5½ DAYS
Students will learn how to keep themselves safe and healthy on board, as well as all other aspects of being a successful deckhand aboard of a superyacht.The modules below explain what is included and what can be expected in terms of learnings and practices.It is important for every person working on board a maritime vessel to be aware of their responsibilities, company and requirements for the ship’s security. Security threat levels, as well as security measures and procedures, are all covered in this module to allow deckhands to be aware of how to ensure safety practices are observed.

DECKHAND – STEWARD / STEWARDESS ONBOARD SKILLS

The Deckhand Skills portion of the training is what provides students with all of the necessary skills and training that they will need in order to be a completely competent deckhand and an asset to the crew they are working with. Some of the material covered includes an introduction to superyachting and the deck hand course, followed by terminology, etiquette and life on board.

DECK HAND – STEWARD / STEWARDESS SEAMANSHIP SKILLS

Those who complete this training will aquire skills such as how to be an effective and expert member of a crew, how to dock, undock, and moor a yacht, as well as basic seamanship, basic navigation, safe working practices and anchor handling, exterior and interior cleaning, care, and maintenance, as well as a number of other skills that deal with practical experience at sea and practical experience of being on board of a superyacht.

ELEMENTARY FIRST AID (EFA) MODULE

The second portion of the deck hand course deals with safety procedures, and anyone working onboard a maritime vessel is required by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to be in possession of certification for completion of this training. It is essential in order to ensure that all safety procedure and protocols are observed on board by all crew members, to make sure that utmost safety is being practiced while on board. This prevents emergency and crisis situations from occurring while on board, for the safety of both the crew and any passengers who might be on board.

FIRE PREVENTION AND FIRE FIGHTING

This module equips you with the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of fires aboard vessels and the correct use of fire-fighting equipment along with rescue techniques.

PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES

You will learn about survival techniques and correct use of equipment, launch and recovery of life rafts, preparation for survival and use of search and rescue organisations. Non-swimmers can also participate on this module.

PERSONAL SAFETY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

This module is classroom based covering basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention, getting students familiarized with employment and working conditions onboard superyachts.

PROFICIENCY IN SECURITY AWARENESS

The second portion of this course is the STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training, whcih also includes a Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) Module. This module is designed to members of the crew who are not assigned any security duties, but who still have a responsibility to be aware of key security issues. Such issues might include maritime transport industry threats, definitions of maritime security terms, roles of security.

Please make sure to arrive on campus one day before you are scheduled to commence your training. Depending on your travel plans and work commitments, there are some great sights to see around the island of Phuket. Most students will generally leave campus one day after the you have received your certificate however we can help you with hotels and transfers if you plan to stay and explore for a few days.

What’s Not Included

Your flight tickets to and from Phuket aren’t included in the training package. It’s best to book your flights once you have received confirmation on which dates your course starts and ends.

What to Bring

Please make sure to bring the items below before starting:

  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of your identity card.
  • Your laptop, pens and notebook to take notes
  • Suitable clothes: two to three shorts (beige / white); flat soft shoes (beige, black or white); flip flops; swimming suit; sunglasses and an outfit for special evening occasions.
  • Toiletries
  • Medical kit or any medicines you may require.

Payment

You can either pay by cash, bank transfer or Western Union the total amount of the deck hand course when registering. We ask that a 50% deposit is made no later that 10 days after registration to secure your spot.
