Medical First Aid at Sea Training Course

Maritime Education Services is located in the Southern area of Thailand, on Phuket Island. We are the only school in Asia with Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) accreditation from the United Kingdom’s government, and are registered with the Ministry of Education in Thailand to provide offshore medical first aid training. We offer a variety of sea courses and offshore medical first aid courses, including the Medical First Aid at Sea course.

Who should take this course?

This course is intended for seafarers who must, in order to comply with their job and with Maritime and Coastguard Agency standards for training and certification, be willing and able to administer medical emergency first aid on board. A seafarer, according to the Maritime Labour Convention, is any person who is employed on a ship in any capacity, or whose primary place of work is on a ship.

It is imperative that the employees take this class, when they are legally designated to be able to administer basic first aid in case of any emergency on any vessel moving up to one hundred and fifty miles away from a safe haven. This ensures safety on board the vessel for crew members and all others on the ship. It is also imperative that these employees comply with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s standards for training and certification when it comes to MCA medical first aid.

This course complies with those standards, and is considered MCA training. While this course is aimed toward those legally required to be qualified to administer emergency first aid on board, it is an informational course regardless of one’s binding duties, and may be helpful to other seafarers like those employed on superyachts, oil rigs, or cruise ships. It is encouraged for anyone who wants to take precautions to maintain a safer environment on board.

It is recommended that those who intend to take this course have already taken and completed an Elementary First Aid course. They should also have a working knowledge of the theory and implementation of basic first aid, as this course is a building point upon that knowledge. It is intended to be taken following the completion of a course in basic first aid.

Course Goals

This Maritime and Coastguard Agency approved course is incredibly informative in both theory and in practice of marine medical first aid. Throughout the duration of the course, those who have chosen to take this course will learn extensively how to deal with and how to administer emergency first aid. This will cover situations involving physical injuries onboard ship including shock, burns, fractures, spinal injuries, temperature extremes, soft tissue injuries, head injuries, bleeding wounds, and loss of consciousness.

In addition to the standard array of emergency injuries and wounds on our first aid pdf that each seafarer will be well equipped to handle, each attendee will also be taught how to utilize equipment, including various devices and technologies in order to perform medic first aid. For instance, each attendee will complete Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training during this course. They will also learn the intricacies of cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as how to effectively handle situations involving heart attacks, choking, and asthma.

This course covers everything from health and hygiene to examination of a casualty. Knowing how to properly deal with an on-board casualty without instigating panic and confusion is incredibly important. Panic and confusion can often lead to an unsafe environment on board, leading to injury or more casualties. This course covers everything from what to do when a casualty is discovered to scene management, examination of the casualty, and transporting a casualty on board the ship.

Whether it is the utilization of equipment, the handling of crowds and crew members during an emergency, or the implementation of various first aid tactics, this course is well equipped to qualify and prepare any seafarer for any type of emergency that may arise on board a sea vessel. Our instructors are knowledgeable in all facets of medical first aid for seafarers. They draw on years of studies as well as years of applied experience in order to give those taking this course the best training the industry has to offer.

Qualifications

Once the course is complete, seafarers and all other attendees receive their official International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Medical First Aid (EFA) Certificate. At that point, they can be trusted to administer medical first aid on a vessel in accordance with STCW 95 A-V1/4 (1-3).

This course is approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to train seafarers in compliance with MCA medical standards and MCA training standards. As such, at the completion of this and many of our sea courses, seafarers will have completed official MCA training in first aid. They will, therefore, be permitted to continue or to begin their job aboard a marine vessel.

The Maritime Education Services’ accreditation as a training institution is granted directly by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Thus, at the completion of this course, each person who has finished the course satisfactorily will be given an official printed MCA certificate
