What Is PDSD?

Course Goals

This extensive PDSD course is designed to prepare all participants for any number of duties on board related to security. The highly trained professionals selected to administer this course have extensive training and years of applied experience, which they are able to draw from in order to be sure that each and every student of this course leaves with proficiency in security awareness.

Throughout the duration of this intensive course, all participants will first and foremost learn the very basics of security on board, including roles and responsibilities of the ship’s crew members. They will also learn what constitutes a threat or risk to the ship in the first place. They will also come away with an intricate knowledge of the equipment, technology, and security methods usually utilized on board, and how they work. 

In addition to this information and theory, participants learn extensively about the practical application and implementation of various security measures that may be required in a state of emergency. After this course, it is expected that participants will be able to effectively implement these security measures.

At the end of this course, upon completion, participants will have gathered a wealth of knowledge relating to security measures and procedures. They should also feel comfortable applying this new knowledge in the context of a real-life situation. This new pool of knowledge and practical skills includes the ability to perform non-intrusive inspections and physical searches and to appropriately manage crowds with myriad proven crowd control techniques.

They will also develop a working understanding of the procedures used to maintain the security plan of the ship at Security Levels one, two, and three. They will also finetune their abilities to conduct precautionary emergency procedure drills relating to ship security with emphasis on adherence to the plan as well as effective communication among all personnel and crew members on board the ship.

Qualifications

This course is approved by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is therefore compliant with their various standards relating to certification and training. Anyone who completes this course is therefore Maritime Coastguard Agency certified in Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA).

Upon completion, a graduate of the course will receive the appropriate International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) recognized PDSD certificate.

Participants who venture to complete this course are compliant with the requirements detailed in section A-VI (see paragraphs 6, 7, and 8) of the designated security duties STCW code. This section pertains to personnel who are employed or otherwise performing services onboard ships.
