In an 11th hour back flip, The Australian Maritime Safety Authority announced today that the deadlines on the STCW convention amendments have been extended for a further 6 months. At this stage we are only able to confirm this being applied to Australian based workers however other countries are expected to follow suit in the coming days.

Please be sure to check with your respective vessel requirements in the mean time if you haven’t renewed your certificates already.Based on previous information all ship operators and crew had until December 31st 2016 to review their STCW certification and be aligned with the Manila Amendments.

In recent weeks leading up to this requirement being implemented the IMO Maritime Safety Committee has expressed a large concern about the number of seafarers who have not yet been issued certificates and how this will effect the industry in the new year and has released a number of exemptions that grants additional time to certain people.

Who will be eligble for an expemtion?

The MSC, AMSA has released information under the Navigation Act 2012 which allows seafarers to be employed on Australian vessels with a certificate of competency, proficiency or basic safety training that complied with core requirements to be in place before the 31st of December which would have otherwise expired regardless of it being re-validated.

The certificates below are those which will remain valid for use and how much of an extension has been allocated to each:

  • Any certificate of competency that was issued on or after the 1st of July in 2012 will now remain valid until the 30th of June in 2017.
  • Any certificate of proficiency that was issued before the 31st of December 2016 will remain valid for use at sea until the 30th of June 2017.
  • Any certificate of safety training that was issued before the 31st of December 2016 will remain valid for use until the 30th of June 2017

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority and all the team at Maritime Education Services encourages all those who work at sea to arrange for their certificates to be re-validated as soon as possible. Our resources are being expanded to cater for a lager intake of students so we can get your training completed before this new deadline arrives.
